Mmm, milk! Local Farms in Pittsburgh!

local farmers I'm a little bit obsessed with dairy. If you've read my previous posts you'll see quite a few about cheese. However, my favorite dairy product is milk! When I go home my mom has to stock up on milk because unlike normal people who crave chocolate and candies, I crave giant glasses of ice cold milk. I will even drink milk with pizza or hamburgers and obviously they don't go together! Just give me milk and I'll be happy.

So to my pleasant surprise, I found a cooperation of local farms that produce milk for the greater Pittsburgh area. Turner Dairy Farms has a partnership with 50 local farms. Fifty! Each farm is located within 70 miles of one of the processing facilities... that means local! Also, each farm gives Turner Dairy Farms rBGH/rBST free milk.

My favorite part about Turner Dairy Farms is their motto. "From local farms to local families." The local movement is still gaining momentum and I'm hoping it continues to do so forever. What I love to read about though are the farms that were pro-local long before it was popular. Turner Dairy Farms has been supporting local agriculture for more than 75 years now! Beginning in 1930, there is a little more than 80 years of local dairy production behind this farm! Wow, that's a lot!

Not only does Turner Dairy Farms have a lot of years under their belt, they also have a lot of awards! At the World Dairy Expo in 2010, this farm won 3rd place in the white milk open.. WORLD expo! Then, this year Turner Dairy Farms won best ice cream mix from the All Star Dairy Association. That's just a couple on their long list of awards.

As you can see by the award I have mentioned, Turner Dairy Farms doesn't just produce top of the line milk. They also produce ice creams, cream, cultured dairy, butter, and more! All of these, just like the milk, are available to us by the local farmers who supply the milk to Turner Dairy Farms. Also, this farm produces one of the most popular iced teas in the Pittsburgh area! To see the entire list of Turner products, check out the website. You can see all of the nutritional information there, as well!

Also on the Turner Dairy Farms website is a list of all the venues you can purchase Turners products. Another pleasant surprise for me is that I found 3 stores in my hometown that sell these products and a few in the surrounding areas of my college. Check it out to see if you can purchase Turners products near you!
