Teaching Local at Crabtree Farms

farmers market, eat localI hate to sound like a broken record, but one of the most important things we can do for our food future is use farming and markets to educate people! Farming is hard work and doesn’t always leave a lot of free time for community outreach, but at Crabtree Farms in Chattanooga, education and research are part of the mission.

A leader in the Chattanooga region, Crabtree has been encouraging people to grow sustainably and eat locally since 1998. They have an extensive list of programs designed to spread the word on how locally grown can make our world a better place. In 2010 they reached over 1,000 local students through their Farm-to-School program called “Dig In Kids”. All of the students were educated on the importance of sustainable farming and the amazing world of fresh foods and cooking. Crabtree also publishes a local food guide for the Chattanooga region called “Taste Buds”, blogs and holds regular events designed to get people involved in their health and their food choices.

It seems like Crabtree would be too busy with all of their great community work to do any actual farming. But they aren’t! They also grow fantastic produce, plants, herbs and flowers seasonally. You can buy from their farm stand, or join their CSA program which is also available in the winter. Crabtree has vendor booths at two Tennessee markets, the Chattanooga Market and the Main Street Market, so finding their products is easy and fun!
