In
the quest to eat healthy, support farmers, grow farmers markets,
back the slow food movement, and do all things good and green, we
certainly believe that knowledge is the key to influencing positive
change in our food industry.
We look to experts in the sciences to provide us with
the answers to questions that plague us like:
- Is organic food really better for me?
- Do GMO crops cause cancer?
- Should I fear eating foods that have been subjected to
pesticides?
- Are animal products treated with...

What
is an omnivore to do?
With technological advancements in cultivation, transportation,
and preservation, we are no longer confined by the season nor which
region of the planet we live in. Food is plentiful and
available in a plethora of choices, at least in the Western
hemisphere.
The problem with this overabundance of food choices (mostly of
the nutritionally inferior variety) is that it presents a societal
dilemma. The conventional food industry, driven by commercial
gain, has taken food...

Whether
you are gardening organic vegetables, or shopping for fresh produce
from your local farmers market, there are numerous reasons you
should be incorporating whole foods (not processed) into
your diet.
For instance, take tomatoes, which are in-season right now and
oh-so delicious in fresh salads, on sandwiches, in stews and pasta
to name a few dishes.
Research studies have shown that tomatoes contain the
antioxidant Lycopene, which is a powerful antioxidant that
is able to withstand the high...

If you
don't have the means to grow your own organic vegetables and raise
your own livestock, the most traditional way to obtain fresh
produce and locally made goods has been to purchase them at the
neighborhood farmers market. In recent years, it's
encouraging to see the newfound resurgence in the popularity of
farmers markets.
For the past several years, the prevalence and added convenience
of shopping at grocery stores and supermarkets, has made it all too
easy to forget about where and how...

One of my
favorite food sources for my 100 mile diet is a farm located
just east of Indianapolis called Tyner Pond Farm. Reclaiming
land that was once used for GMO corn, soybeans and wheat, Farmer
Chris took on the project of turning this plot of farmland into one
that uses sustainable farming practices.
He raises grass fed wagyu cattle, pasture-raised pigs, free
range chickens and harvests their nutritional eggs. He's even
recently added honeybees to the mix.
A small operation that is just...

Incubated and newly hatched, these chicks are the future
egg-layers of America!
Hiding out under a heat lamp to keep warm, they hardly seem to
know the mission ahead of them at this tender age. Soon
enough they will realize...
(It's a serious undertaking, after all, to provide this
country with nutritious eggs the old fashioned way.)
On a small farm in the middle of America, these feathered
friends will be allowed to roam the open green pastures every day
of the week. As a result of their...

With the weather warming up and the farmers market season
beginning in many regions, this short video may be helpful to some
of our rookie market goers out there: "How to Shop at
a Farmers Market"
Don't be ashamed, we've all been first timers at the market
once in our lives...
Some of the tips they include are bringing a list, shopping
early in the morning to get the most variety and talking with your
vendors to get tips on seasonal harvests.
I'd add to that bringing a shopping a bag (so you're...

I've
been attending the indoor farmers market all winter, and I'm
looking forward to the start of the outdoor market season in just a
couple of weeks here in Indianapolis, Indiana.
With the change in weather recently, I've had the opportunity to
stroll around our fine city that was recently spruced up for this
year's NFL Super Bowl.
While out, I stumbled upon the Wishard Slow Food Garden out at
the White River State Park along our city's cultural trail.

The farmers market is anything but boring. I mean, look
what happened in Nashville, Tennessee here.
Who knows when this could hit your local

The next time you're shopping for free range pork, or perusing
the offerings of your neighborhood organic dairy farm, you could
easily get caught up in just such a frenzy. I know I
would!
Anyways, enjoy this video. I bet it was fun to plan and
even more fun to pull off in front of unexpecting farmers market
