My Farmers Market: Community Farmers Market in Downtown Chehalis

farmers marketsI keep talking about my local farmers market, and now that it's open, let's finally give it a plug!

I am lucky enough to buy my locally grown produce from perhaps the smallest yet one of the finest farmers markets you're going to find: the Community Farmers Market.

Every Tuesday from late spring into the fall, one short block of downtown Chehalis, Wash. is closed to traffic and set up with booths. For such a small space, this farmers market offers plenty to choose from. Several local farms such as Boistfort Valley Farm and the Wobbly Cart Farming Cooperative are there each week selling fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables and some of the lushest lettuce you’ll ever see. But you’ll find lots more at this mini market! There’s a bakery selling artisan breads and sweet stuff too, two cheese makers offering gourmet swiss cheese and soft cheeses made from sheep’s milk, a local sausage maker, cut flowers of every color, local honey, and hand-made soap and lavender wreaths that smell divine in the hot summer sun.

Most Tuesdays you’ll find a musician entertaining the crowds, and occasionally a local chef will set up shop and give lessons in how to make the most of the seasonal produce. If all that food makes you hungry, you can grab a sandwich and lemonade from the food vendor on the corner or at one of the wonderful restaurants that surround the market. It’s all here on Tuesdays! And every Tuesday I continue to be impressed at the quality that's packed into one little half block.

Even if you don't live in the area, it's easy to get to this farmers market from I-5 if driving between Seattle and Portland one summer Tuesday. Plan to take exit 77 for a little farmers market detour and you'll be oh so glad you did!
