My Farmers Market Bounty

Look what I found yesterday at my local farmers market!

First, just look at that cute little purple garlic.  I was recommended to head over to an Amish farmer’s stand for “the best fresh purple garlic here” from another farmer – I love the cooperative attitude at the market.  Until yesterday, I’d never had purple garlic.  More on that later.

The garlic is resting nicely on some snow pea shoots – my hubs’ favorite for topping any salad.

Next to the shoots are radish pods – never heard of such a thing!  They’re basically radish seeds still in pod form, and they’re very spicy and pop in your mouth.  I bought a packet to snack on at work.

I wanted to make a stir fry yesterday, and I really needed some sugar snap peas.  Instead, I got something even better – a blend of sugar snap and snow peas, with some heirloom varieties mixed in.  Some were sweet, some were a bit peppery – absolutely perfect.  (And only $4 a pound, which as my husband said is only 1 cent more than they charge at the grocery store!  I love knowing I’m getting a deal AND supporting my local farmers.)

Then there’s the mizuna.  It’s a mild leafy green, great for salads, less peppery than arugula.  This is our first time trying it – hoping to have another green to add to our rotation.  And we got about four times what is pictured for $3.  Can’t beat that!

Finally, we got a beautiful tomato to top our tacos this week, and a small kohlrabi.  Again, something I’d never tried.  Apparently it’s great sliced raw and added to a salad.  I picked this up on a whim from the Amish farmer with the purple garlic.

Not pictured is the dozen free range eggs and pound of grass-fed ground beef we got from a local farm.  Quite a success this week, don’t you think?  What did you all get at your market over the weekend?
